Patrick J. Blake > Northern Mockingbird / Moqueur polyglotte
Mimas polyglottos
Archbald, Pennsylvania

This bird has an interesting story attached to it.  Here in Ottawa, northern mockingbirds are rare and only recently have slowly started to make appearances.  Their range ends along the Canadian/U.S. border, but is starting to move northward.  While visiting my parents in Pennsylvania over Easter weekend 2008, I came across this fine specimen while we were leaving a Saturday mass.  I rushed home to get my camera, and returned to find that the bird had not left - luckily for me.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and would see mockingbirds all the time.  Now that I live in Ottawa, the ordinary has become the extraordinary, and a mockingbird sighting is front-page news in the birding circles.

The first few days of our vacation to South Carolina were overcast, cold, and rainy.  When the sun finally broke through, I decided to take a sunrise walk along the beach, which was just across the street from my aunt's condo.  I came across a northern mockingbird near an adjacent hotel, sitting quitely on a fence post.  The fresh sunlight cast a nice yellow tone on the setting.

Throughout our stay in Myrtle Beach, a mockingbird could be found without fail in the bushes just outside the condo.  Although it was dutifully present in the bush throughout the day, it was a shy bird, and didn't give me many opportunities for a portrait.
