First-year (1cy) juvenile
Larus glaucoides

A lone juvenile Iceland gull rests among a roost of mallards on the Rideau River.  Note the dark beak - this field marker helps to discriminate Iceland juveniles from the similar (but larger) glaucous gull.  If size comparison is not available, this trick is a helpful way to ID a gull in the field.

I really like this photo because it gives plenty of different gull species for size comparisons.  The juvenile glaucous is just a little smaller than the great black-backed gull, but towers over the ring-billed gulls nearby.

This bird was a lucky find for South Carolina.  Lesser black-backed gulls are Europe's verson of our great black-backed gull.  The two gulls are superficially similar in appearance, but lesser black-backs are smaller (approximately comparable to a ring-billed gull), have brown streaking on the head, a lighter grey mantle (back), and the most obvious trait, yellow legs.

Lesser black-backs have become more frequent visitors to the eastern seaboard in recent years.  However, most lists I looked at before my trip listed lesser black-backs as exceptional or accidental in the Myrtle Beach area.  Nonetheless, I located two lesser black-backs mingling with large roosts of ring-billed, laughing, and American herring gulls on this night; six days later I would discover a total of twelve individual birds on the same stretch of beach.

I don't get the chance to observe terns very often in Ottawa, so I kept my eyes peeled for them on the beaches of South Carolina.  On an overcast, dreary day, Melanie and I came across a flock of four Forster's terns taking a break from hunting for fish.  This bird became my 250th species.
