Dragonflys > Patrick J. Blake > Nature > Dragonflies & Damselflies
In an attempt to try my hand at something different, I've compiled a gallery of dragonflies and damselflies that I have happened across during my usual bird outings. I am novice at dragonfly identification, so please feel free to let me know if I make a misidentification on any of these photos.

These photos are best viewed in large or extra large format.

Members of the Aeshna genus closely resemble one another, and often times are not distinguishable except by close examination in the hand. However, some species have small field markers that can aid identification.

Like the lance-tipped darners pictured earlier, the Canada darner has thoracic stripes that fade from blue to yellow. However, thoracic stripes on Canada darners are irregularly shaped, whereas lance-tipped darners have very straight, even stripes. Another feature on Canada darners is a small yellow spot next to the second thoracic stripe, which is absent in lance-tipped and other similar darner species.

A pair of powdered dancers are preparing to mate. In dragonflies, a male will grasp a female by her head, whereas in damselflies, the female is grasped just behind her head, the prothorax.
