Your Bio

Welcome to our photo galleries.  We hope you enjoy looking through our photos as much as we enjoyed taking them.

My wife and I live in Ottawa, Ontario.  On our weekends we almost always head out on the road to any one of the numerous parks and conservation areas in the Ottawa region.  We enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, but our main hobby is birding.  Many of these galleries are dedicated to our bird and wildlife photography, which is a hobby that has taken on a life of its own.  All of the photos presented here were taken in the field, and they are all wild birds, unless otherwise noted.  I currently shoot with a Sony Alpha A100 and a 300mm lens, but I had a Kodak Z650 before and a couple of the shots uploaded were taken with that.

Please feel free to look through the galleries, and come back often, as we will update whenever the birds are cooperating.  Also, we'd love to hear from you, so don't hesitate to leave a comment or two.

Tyrant Flycatchers : Members of the family Tyrannidae, these flycatchers are notoriously difficult to visually identify in the field.  Many genera have several species that are practically identical in plumage, and can only be distinguished from one another by their songs and calls.  Two examples are the Empidonax and the Myiarchus genera.
Many of these photos will appear as though I just took a series of photos of the same bird and slapped a different label on each one.  Fortunately I will attach a link to Cornell's Macaulay Library to provide a sample of the bird's call which I used to correctly identify the bird.

Warblers : Summer is the season of warblers. You can't go anywhere without hearing their lyrical, complex songs echoing from every nook and cranny. By far my favourite time for birding is near the end of the spring migration, when the warblers arrive en masse. There are so many species of warbler, and so many shapes and colours for them to come in.

Sandpipers, Plovers, & Snipes : Sandpipers and plovers are the ubiquitous birds of the shore.  They can also be found inland around lakes, rivers, and mudflats.  Sandpipers are members of the family Scolopacidae, along with snipes and woodcocks, while plovers are members of the family Charadriidae.

Bluebirds : The "Bluebird Trail" of Ottawa runs along Earl Armstrong Road in the Gloucester area. This rural part of the region is prime habitat for Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis), and for the past several years a number of nestboxes have been maintained to provide nesting areas for this beautiful birds. All of the photos in this gallery were taken at the Bluebird Trail, unless otherwise noted.

I hope to follow the story of a particular pair of bluebirds that have taken up residence in one of the nestboxes. This will be a kind of photojournal, so check back often to see how they're doing this summer.
